Hawaii Medical Marijuana

hawaii-senate-bill-862 was approved by the Hawaii House of Representatives 32-18, and by the Hawaii state Senate by a vote of 13-12. It was signed into law by Governor Ben Cayetano on June 14th 2000.

The legal medical marijuana program for the state of Hawaii allows legal medical marijuana patients to receive a medical marijuana recommendation from a state certified physician, apply for a Hawaii state issued medical marijuana ID card. Ownership of an ID card allows a patient to possess and cultivate medical marijuana as per state guidelines.

Hawaii Possession & Cultivation Regulations

Certified medical marijuana patients in Hawaii are permitted to cultivate up to seven (7) plants, immature or mature, and possess up to four (4) ounces of dried usable marijuana at any given time. Distribution of cannabis except between a caregiver and their patient is strictly prohibited, patients or their caregivers must home cultivate their own medicine.

The Hawaii medical marijuana program is unique in that it only permits the home cultivation of cannabis and not its general distribution via channels seen in other state programs. As a result Hawaii has had a relatively stable medical marijuana program since its passing in 2000.
